Dear Colleague, We are pleased to inform you that the Low Energy Polarized Electron Workshop, will be held on September 2 - 5, 1998 in St. Petersburg just prior to the 13th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics ( Protvino, Russia, September 8-12, 1998 ). You are invited to attend the Workshop. Please find below the Bulletin 1 with preliminary information and the Registration form. If you are interested in participation or wish to obtain further information, complete the registration form and return it at your earliest convenience, but not later than February 1, 1998. The formal invitation will be mailed to those who register and express an interest in attending. Please, indicate below names and e-mail addresses of colleagues who should be added to our mailing list. We look forward to welcoming you to St. Petersburg in September 1998. Sincerely, Yuri Mamaev, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. --------------------------------------------------------------------- LOW ENERGY POLARIZED ELECTRON WORKSHOP St.Petersburg, Russia, September 2 - 5, 1998 BULLETIN 1 November 25, 1997 General Information ------------------- The Low Energy Polarized Electron Workshop, organized by Saint-Petersburg State Technical University (SPTU), A.F.Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute (PTI), RAS and Sponsored by the International Committee for High-Energy Spin Physics Symposia, to be held just prior to the SPIN98 13th INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON HIGH-ENERGY SPIN PHYSICS (Protvino, Russia). The workshop will follow an interdisciplinary approach, which has proven fruitful in past workshops. Contributions from all areas of research will be welcomed. Participants may present papers, which will then be published in the SPIN98 proceedings. Informal presentations and discussions will also be scheduled. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Topics will include: Physics of Polarized Electron Photocathodes - Bulk ( optical orientation, high polarization, electron transport, depolarization) - Band Banding Region phenomena - Negative Electron Affinity, high quantum efficiency, lifetime, activation layer phenomena..... New structures, fabrication and cleaning techniques. Charge limitation. Polarized Electron Guns. Status reports, new gun designs. RF guns. Helium afterglow guns. High average current/ high brightness current extraction... Helicity correlated emission-asymmetries. Low-Energy Polarimeters (Mott detectors, spin-dependent absorption and transmission, spin-dependent surface current...). Related Technical Issues Both the invited and contributed talks are planned. The program of the Workshop will be compiled on the basis of Abstracts of the contributed papers. The deadline for submission of Abstracts is May 1, 1998. Late abstracts will be considered on a case by case basis. The Workshop will consist of four day sessions ( Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday), during which various excursions and the Conference Dinner are planned. If you are interested in participating, complete the registration form attached to this bulletin. All participants are kindly asked to return the registration form before February 1, 1998. The updated information can be found in the WWW home page of the SPIN98 Symposium http://www.ihep.su/~spin98. Proceedings ----------- Contributed papers are welcomed. Talks submitted to the Workshop will be published in the Proceedings. The Proceedings will be mailed to all participants free of charge. Instructions for preparing the papers for the Proceedings will be distributed with the second bulletin. The Workshop site: ------------------ State Education Centre of St. Petersburg. This modern conference center has well equipped conference auditoriums for oral presentations, rooms for poster sessions, all necessary audio/visual equipment, computer visualisation interfacing, real-time translation capability, document copying facilities, etc. The Centre also has modern hotel lodging and restaurants. It is a secure and safe facility and it includes its own medical clinic. It takes about 15 minutes by Metro (U-train) to downtown. Transportation and accommodation ------------------------------- Information on the arrival date and flight number prior the Workshop is necessary to arrange transportation to the conference centre During the Workshop the participants will be accommodated at the State Education Centre (SEC) hotel. Single and double rooms with bath or shower are available. It is also available the accommodation in the hotels in historical centre of St.Petersburg. Visa ---- You should present to the Organizing Committee all necessary information for visa requests for you and accompanying persons by filling the Registration Form attached. Invitations will be sent upon registration form is received. Weather ------- The weather in St. Petersburg at the beginning of September is mostly fine. The temperature is usually about 15 C. A light coat or a sweater may be needed as well as a raincoat and an umbrella. Social program -------------- The social program of the Workshop will include Welcome Party, Conference Dinner and excursions. The excursions to SPTU and to PTI will be organised. Excursion tours of St.Petersburg will be available for participants and accompanying persons: - Sightseeing tour around St.Petersburg (free of charge) - The Hermitage - Suburbs of St.Petersburg: Petrodvorets, Pavlovsk, Pushkin - Mussorgsky Theatre of Opera and Ballet Registration fee ------------------- The registration fee is US $100.
